AERIAL skier Laura Peel will be out to put Australia amongst the medals at the freestyle world championships in Kazakhstan after the mogul skiers missed the mark.

Two-time Olympian Peel is the World Cup leader but is expected to face fierce competition in Almaty on Wednesday from Americans Winter Vinecki and Megan Nick, who have also won events this season.

Peel last won the world title in 2015, but last year claimed the crystal globe as the overall champion of the aerial skiing season.

Danielle Scott could also challenge after making a triumphant return to competition last month after three years out following knee surgery, winning gold in a World Cup meet in Utah.

In the women's moguls French World Cup leader and Olympic champion Perrine Laffont put in a stunning run in the superfinal to claim her first world title, with Australia's Jakara Anthony just short of the medals in fourth spot.

Australia's 2017 world champion Britt Cox missed competing in the six-skier superfinal by one place.

Australia's Olympic mogul silver medallist Matt Graham, who is the current World Cup leader, went into the titles with high hopes but was uncharacteristically off the pace.

Brodie Summers qualified third and rookie Cooper Woods-Topalovic fifth after the first final, but they were both unable clinch a top six spot and battle for a medal in the superfinal.

Woods-Topalovic, 20, finished the best placed Australian in the men's single moguls in 15th, with Canadian superstar Mikael Kingsbury winning his fifth world championship gold medal. - AAP
