Police prepare for bumper snow season

BRIGHT police are preparing for a massive snow season, with police having a 24–hour presence over the first week throughout Falls Creek and Mt Hotham resorts.

Senior Sergeant Doug Incoll said police will be available at the resorts 24/7 for any assistance required.

"Police will be starting an operation which will be based around chain compliance, with proactive advice around safety messaging about preparation," he said.

"Regardless of any snow on the ground on the opening weekend police are expecting with the implications of COVID, we will see different people who haven't been to the snow before.

"The resorts will be booked out, so police will be targeting licensed premises and looking at people who might have drunk too much and are misbehaving to ensure they don't affect others at the resorts."

Snr Sergeant Incoll encouraged people to have their wits about them with the conditions.

He said police will be doing spot checks to make sure people have the appropriate wheel chains, regardless if there is snowfall.

"With the weather changing it is important people have got their cars prepared with antifreeze in their radiators or for diesel drivers to alpine mix," he said.

"Drivers will need to be patient with local speed limits, visibility being limited from about 50 metres and also black ice being present, so if you are unsure, we encourage people to pull to the side and also drive with caution."

With many people looking at going to the resorts this year, police want everyone to be able to identify all of their equipment and clothing, with theft being prominent.

"Make sure your clothing and other snow gear is identifiable and don't leave identifiable valuables aren't left in cars and ain't visible," Snr Sergeant Incoll said.
